Two Face Drug Charges After Traffic Stop

A traffic stop resulted in two Florida residents being taken into police custody. According to the report, the officer pulled the 42-year-old male driver over in Cape Coral at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 4 when he observed that the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

The officer discovered that the driver was operating his vehicle on an expired license. After issuing a citation for said license, the officer reportedly warned the driver about driving without a seat belt before asking for permission to search the vehicle. The driver consented.

During the vehicle search, a small baggie of what was discovered to be methamphetamine was found in the 41-year-old female passenger’s wallet. Additionally, they allegedly recovered chemicals and other materials that are commonly used to manufacture the drug. A pill of Alprazolam, for which he did not have a prescription, was also reportedly discovered on the driver’s person.

Both men were taken into police custody. The passenger was charged for the manufacture of methamphetamine. The driver was charged for the manufacture of methamphetamine, for possession of methamphetamine and for the possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. It was not reported if both individuals remained in custody or when their court hearing is.

Being convicted on a drug charge can result in severe consequences, including a potential jail sentence. However, if this is the individual’s first offense and the evidence against them is strong, they may be able to negotiate with the prosecution in order to have the punishments associated with a drug conviction reduced. For example, the person may be able to enter into a court-ordered rehabilitation program with the possibility of having the charge dismissed if all of the requirements are met.
