Increase in Traffic Tickets for Failing to Yield to Pedestrians

Orlando Police and the Orange County Sheriff’s department will be issuing traffic tickets to drivers who do not yield to pedestrians.  This special detail called “Operation Best Foot Forward” started October 30th and will continue for two weeks. Police will be setting up at key intersections throughout the city.  Traffic tickets will be issued to drivers who fail to yield to people walking in marked crosswalks.  Violators will face fines of $164 and three (3) points on their licenses.  The goal of the operation is to reduce pedestrian injuries and deaths by making it safer, healthier and more fun to walk.

Wednesday November 7th

• Central Blvd & Lake Ave.  7:30 am – 8:30 am

• Church St. & Glen Ln.   10:00am – 11:00 am

• I-Drive & Kirkman Rd. 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Thursday November 8th

• Rollins St. & Camden Rd. 7:30 am – 8:30 am

• Lake Baldwin Ln. & Almond Ave 9:15 am -10:15 am

• W. Oakridge Rd. East of Millenia 10:15 am- 11:15 am

This is not a criminal offense, however this can affect your driver’s license.  If you do get ticketed, you may be able to challenge it and or keep points off your license.  At least 400 tickets have been issued so far and most people that do get ticketed were unaware of this law.

Florida’s Traffic Law states that drivers must yield to pedestrians at any intersection.  This applies even if there are no markings or signs indicating a crosswalk.  If a car is stopped at a crosswalk, you may not pass that car or go around it.  A vehicle that is turning must yield to pedestrians crossing on a green light and for pedestrians that have a WALK signal.  Drivers must come to a complete stop, not just slow down. Pedestrians must yield to cars when cars have the right-of-way.
